The last mile is where AI programmes die
Enterprise AI rarely fails on capability. It fails in the distance between a general system and a specific business process — the fifty unwritten rules, the four systems that disagree about the same customer, the exception your best operator handles without thinking. That distance is not documentation anyone has. It has to be walked by someone who understands both the technology and the operation.
Most vendors ship a platform and leave that last mile to the customer. It is precisely where AI programmes stall — not in the pilot, which usually works, but in the year afterwards when nobody owns the gap between the demo and production. We staff that gap deliberately, and we make the FDE accountable for the outcome rather than for the deployment.

What a forward deployed engineer actually does
Not an account manager, and not a resource on a timesheet. One engineer, accountable for one operation reaching production and staying there.
Learns the operation firsthand
Sits with the people doing the work, not with the org chart. The first deliverable is an understanding of the process as it is actually performed, including the parts that contradict the SOP.
Writes the process specification
Turns tacit judgement into something executable, versioned and testable. This artefact is yours, and it is valuable even if you never run a single agent against it.
Wires the integrations
Connects your systems of record into the knowledge layer, resolving the entity and permission problems that make enterprise retrieval hard.
Builds and tunes the agents
Composes the workflow, sets the tool permissions and escalation thresholds, and fine-tunes a domain model where the token economics justify it.
Owns the evaluation suite
Defines what correct means for your process and measures it continuously. When we claim a quality number, this is where it comes from.
Runs the handover
Trains your team to operate and extend what was built, and documents what they are taking on. An engagement that cannot end is a dependency, not a delivery.

Deliberately short, deliberately narrow, and structured so that the results — not the roadmap — determine whether it continues.
Architecture review
One FDE and a solutions architect map your data estate, your existing models and your candidate processes onto the blueprint, and tell you plainly what is missing.
First process, supervised
The FDE embeds with the team that owns the process. One process reaches production in recommend-only mode, inside your infrastructure, with an eval suite behind it.
Measure, then decide
Cost per unit of work, quality against the eval set, and an honest account of the exceptions we got wrong. The results decide whether the programme continues.
Handover or managed operation
Your team takes ownership, or we keep running the operation against an SLA. Both are supported; the choice is yours and it is not structural.

What this is not
"Embedded engineers" is a phrase several different businesses use to mean quite different things. Three distinctions worth making explicit before you buy.
Not staff augmentation
An FDE arrives with the platform behind them. You are not buying hours to point at a backlog — you are buying an outcome that a specific person is accountable for.
Not a consulting engagement
The deliverable is running software with an eval history, not a strategy deck and a maturity model. If nothing is in production, the engagement has not succeeded.
Not a permanent dependency
Handover is a defined phase with defined criteria, and we would rather you reached it. Ongoing managed operation is a choice you make, not a lock-in you discover.
